Using SLJ Lecture Notes Onsite
Introduction
Believers Chapel Library is the current archival repository of a collection of Dr. Johnson’s seminary classroom lecture notes on books of the Bible and various theological and doctrinal topics (the “SLJ Lecture Notes”) which are listed on the SLJ Notes page. The SLJ Lecture Notes are considered unpublished works of the author, Dr. S. Lewis Johnson, Jr., and are therefore subject to copyright protection under the current copyright laws. The ownership of the SLJ Lecture Notes is held by Samuel L. Johnson, III and his family (the “Johnson Family”).
The SLJ Lecture Notes are available to qualified researchers for private study, scholarship and research upon written request to and approval by Believers Chapel in the manner set forth below. To request permission to access the original SLJ Lecture Notes onsite at the Believers Chapel Library, researchers must complete and submit the Research Application form.
Procedures For Requesting Materials During An Onsite Visit
- Researchers must complete and sign and obtain approval of the Research Application form and must provide acceptable identification (driver’s license or photographic I.D. card).
- The SLJ Lecture Notes are housed in closed stacks. Researchers may request particular items by submitting the appropriate call slips to the Reference Librarian. The Reference Librarian will bring the material to the researcher in a designated reading room.
- All materials must be consulted in the designated areas only and may not be taken to other areas of the Believers Chapel Library.
- The Believers Chapel Library reserves the right to inspect all research materials and personal articles before the researcher leaves the building.
Handling And Care Of Materials During A Visit
- The researcher must accept the responsibility of handling carefully all materials made available. The SLJ Lecture Notes are to be maintained in the order in which they are received by the researcher. If any material is discovered out of order, please notify the Reference Librarian. Do not rearrange papers. The materials may not be leaned on, written on, folded, traced over or handled in any way that may damage them.
- Researchers may be limited in the amount of material received at one time.
- The use of ink is strictly prohibited.
- No food or beverages are allowed in the Believers Chapel Library, and smoking is prohibited.
- All materials must be returned to the Reference Librarian by 4:00 p.m. or before the researcher leaves the Believers Chapel Library.
- Mutilation, destruction and theft of the materials are subject to prosecution.
Reproduction For Research Use
Subject to approval by Believers Chapel of a request to reproduce, Believers Chapel will permit limited reproduction of a portion of the original SLJ Lecture Notes on an individual basis during an onsite visit, provided that the reproduction is not to be used for any purpose other than the private study, scholarship, or research of the applicant.
If such a reproduction request is approved, all onsite photocopies must be made by authorized Believers Chapel library staff. Photocopying of the entire SLJ Lecture Notes is not permitted. Permission to reproduce does not constitute permission to publish. The reproductions provided may not be further reproduced without prior permission of Believers Chapel. The person requesting reproduction assumes the liability for any later use exceeding “fair use” under the copyright laws
Permission To Publish
Researchers should be aware that the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, USC) provides protection for unpublished materials as well as for published works. Permission to publish from or to quote from previously unpublished works under copyright must first be obtained from the copyright holder. The SLJ Lecture Notes are an unpublished work and the copyright is owned by the Johnson Family. Any researcher seeking to publish or quote from the SLJ Lecture Notes must complete and submit the Request for Permission to Publish form and obtain the permission of the Johnson Family. Upon receipt of the submitted Request for Permission from the applicant, Believers Chapel will forward it to the Johnson Family for its approval. Clearance of copyright is always the responsibility of the person wishing to publish the materials and is not the responsibility of Believers Chapel.
